Why this why now
Pupils will already have explored basic bat and ball (net/ wall) games at primary school. This requires pupils to transfer and apply previously learnt principles of attack and defence to consider how they apply in a different context. They will need to persist with tasks set and develop their ability to observe others to officiate and/ or coach. Later in net and wall games they will develop basic skills and hand-eye coordination further whilst also learning specific rules and techniques for badminton and tennis.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils know the basic format for racket sports to include terms like serve, forehand, backhand, singles and doubles.
- Pupils understand why they have to aim at space in order to beat an opponent.
- Pupils are able to create a short cooperative rally with their partner.
- Pupils show an ability to manage their emotions and focus on skills to improve their technique/performance.
