Why this why now

Pupils will already have deepened their understanding of how to set SMART targets that support a meaningful and motivating fitness programme. They will have learnt about some of the barriers to participation and how they can be overcome along with the long term health and fitness benefits of both continuous and interval training programmes to include circuits. Later in health and wellbeing pupils will explore a variety of additional approaches to holistic wellbeing to include couch to 5k; yoga, pilates and mindfulness; and exercises associated with martial arts and self-defence.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know that good technique above everything else is important when completing exercises designed to improve our fitness.
  • Pupils understand that everyone has different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to fitness and that goals must be individualised.
  • Pupils are able to adapt their training to make it easier or harder to ensure they are being effectively challenged.
  • Pupils show resilience to keep going when fitness programmes are challenging.
