Why this why now

Pupils will already have explored basic skills to hit forehands and backhands and ideas for maintaining rallies in pickleball. This unit requires pupils to transfer these skills and basic tactics to badminton where every shot is hit without a bounce. They will need to accurately replicate key techniques whilst also figuring out how to outwit their opposition. Later in net and wall games they will understand more about effective performance and further develop their decision making skills.

Prior knowledge requirements

Pupils know from pickleball about lunging to move around court and serving from behind the baseline and alternating sides whilst continuing to serve if they win the point.
Pupils understand the difference between groundstrokes, volleys, drops, smashes and lobs as well as the importance of varying pace and angle to outwit their opponent.
Pupils are able to maintain a cooperative rally by hitting predominately to their partners forehand and can feed a ball for their partner to practice shots.
Pupils show an ability to persevere with tasks set and self-officiate games of singles and doubles fairly.
