Why this why now

In Year 2 pupils considered ideas of rules for living. In Year 6 they revisit this at a deeper level to ask questions about what are Christian, Muslim and Humanist values? They will consider texts such as the Beatitudes and what values they might be said to articulate. They will consider how non-religious people ground their values. This unit towards the end of Year 6 will allow pupils to reflect on their own worldview and what would ground their own values.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils will understand that philosophers are people who think hard and ask questions
  • Pupils will have an understanding of Christian ideas of love and forgiveness
  • Pupils will be able to explain who the Prophet Muhammad is and how he is a role model for Muslims
  • Pupils will understand that humanism is a non-religious worldview and humanists explain the world looking at natural origins

Ethics: How do we decide what is good?

In this unit pupils will consider the idea of what is good from a philsophical perspective. They will look at how Christians, Muslims and Humanists construct values - noting similarities and differences. They will examine Aristotle's idea of the golden mean and reflect on their own values.
