Why this why now
In Year 4 pupils were introduced to the idea of pilgrimage as a sacred journey. This unit builds on that but has carefully chosen different case studies to draw out continuity and change. Studying Kumbh Mela and the Ganges allow pupils to see that pilgrimage is not simply a feature of Abrahamic traditions. Iona allows pupils to see how an ancient site was reestablished by modern Christians and will sow seeds for Key Stage 4. Glastonbury allows pupils to see how ancient Pagan and Christian stories intertwine and show how the landscape of religion is shifting - a point to be examined later.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Understand that pilgrimage is a sacred journey
- Understand the Hindu worldview describes deities as manifestations of Brahman
- Understand that Christians might make pilgrimages to scared places
- Understand the Christian story of crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus

Pilgrimage: why are people still drawn to ancient places?
In this unit pupils will revist the idea of pilgrimage. They will investigate case studies of the sites of Iona, the Ganges and Glastonbury. From this they will learn that there has been a Christian or Hindu presence there for centuries. They will note how there is both continuity and change.
