Why this why now

Pupils will already have explored basic principles of attack and defence and experimented with tactics and power plays. They will unpick why creating space is essential for success in invasion games and how to achieve this as a team with deception, creativity and the use of set plays. The importance of good positioning and a strong stance is explored both when shooting and defending. The unit will take an overarching look at the basic tactics required to outwit opponents without focussing on a specific sport or activity.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know that all invasion games have similar features of attacking and defensive play to either score or deny scoring opportunities respectively.
  • Pupils understand that football, netball, rugby, basketball and handball are all examples of invasion games with different rules but all games are played as a team.
  • Pupils are able to control and pass a ball in a variety of ways.
  • Pupils show a willingness to try new activities and focus on improving their skills.

Invasion games: basic tactics to overcome opponents in donor sports

This unit explores tactics to overcome opponents with a focus on keeping possession of a ball either in hand or at your feet. Pupils will learn how to move on and off the ball to create space, to create options and to outwit others in ‘donor’ sports and scenarios that can be applied to many sports.
