Lesson details
Key learning points
- The numbers 11-19 can be formed by combining a ten and ones.
- The numbers 11-19 can be partitioned into a ten and ones.
- Tens frames can be used to represent the numbers 11 to 19
Keywords
Partition - Splitting an object or value into smaller parts.
Tens - A ten is a group of 10 ones.
Ones - Individual objects, grouped in ones.
Common misconception
Pupils use one to one correspondence to count all rather than counting on from a group of 10 to identify a teen number.
Provide concrete and pictorial examples where it is more difficult to count the ones in a group of 10 e.g. a bundle of straws or box of pencils. Encourage pupils to use the phrase 'one ten and ...' to focus attention on counting on from 10
Pupils should spend time with practical, concrete examples in this lesson making a group of 10 and attaching this to how one ten is written in a teen number. Place value understanding is key to later concepts and so it is worth taking time to deepen pupils' experiences.
