These concepts are extended from the Early Years Foundation Stage Early Learning Goals, People, culture and communities, and Creating with materials, and introduce personal and family food preferences, culture and location. Factors affecting food choice are developed in Year 2, via the thread Consumer awareness, focusing on food occasions, celebrations and global cuisine.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils will be able to name fruit and vegetables familiar to them.
- Pupils will be able to say whether they like or dislike a specific fruit or vegetable.
- Pupils will be able to use some describing words to explain why they like or dislike a fruit or vegetable.
- Pupils can talk about the food they and their family like.

In this unit pupils taste a range of fruit and vegetables to develop their sensory skills. They explore why people eat different types of food, such as time of day or culture, and plan and make a salad for their family.
