Threads

Why this why now

The food and drink we choose depends on a wide range of factors, and some of these change through life. By studying these factors, as well as special occasions, pupils' ability to plan and justify food choices for others and contexts improves. This unit builds on Eatwell Guide messaging from Year 2, and in the future units the thread of Healthy eating and nutrition is put into practice to plan meals and snacks for themselves and others.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils can use the Eatwell Guide to talk about the foods needed to be healthy.
  • Pupils can use the Eatwell Guide to plan a meal.
  • Pupils know that we need at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables everyday.
  • Pupils know that meals should include 3-4 of the main food groups and a drink.
  • Pupils will know that some people cannot eat wheat, which is milled into flour to make bread.

Food and drink choices

In this unit pupils explore the factors that determine what people eat and drink. They investigate and plan food for different occasions and celebrations, and make tuna canapés for a party.
