      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can plan food for different occasions, justifying my choices.

      Key learning points

      1. There are many special occasions associated with different types of food.
      2. We eat different food on special occasions.
      3. There are many different festivals and events that are celebrated with special foods.

      Keywords

      • Special occasion - a meeting to celebrate an important event or achievement

      • Religious festival - a time of importance for those following a religion

      Common misconception

Everyone in a religion celebrates a festival in the same way.

The way religious festivals are celebrated varies based on where people live, their culture and denominational differences. For example, Christmas is widely celebrated by non-Christians, focusing on family, giving and joy.

      Teacher tip

Bring special occasions or religious festivals to life by providing sample foods for pupils to try. This is often motivating and it also highlights the significance of foods to the occasion. There are lots of opportunities for cross-curricular learning, as well as for making different foods.
