Why this why now

Food and drinks provide the energy and nutrients required by the body to grow, be active and maintain health. Being able to describe different nutrients, and their sources and function, gives an appreciation for the need and importance of a varied and balanced diet for good nutrition. This learning extends the Healthy eating and nutrition thread from Year 4, showing how the Eatwell Guide conveys nutrition messaging via food groups. In Year 6, pupils use and apply Healthy eating and nutrition messages to their own and others' diets.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils can sort meals and snacks into the Eatwell Guide food groups.
  • Pupils can suggest improvements to meals (with reasons).
  • Pupils can maps dishes and meals against the Eatwell Guide food groups for improvements.
