Backups and keeping data safe
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can explain how to keep data safe and how backups can support device recovery.
Key learning points
- A backup is a copy of important data stored somewhere safe. This could be online or on another device.
- Backups protect information if something goes wrong. Regular backups ensure no recent data is lost.
- Accounts link data and settings to the user, not just the device.
- This makes it possible to access information on a new or replacement device.
- If a device is lost, personal data may be accessed by others.
Keywords
Backup - an extra copy of data stored in a different place
Recovery - to retrieve and restore data that was lost, or access to a system
Cloud - a network of remote servers that can be accessed using the internet
Common misconception
It is always possible to recover lost data.
It is not always possible to recover lost data because it may have been permanently deleted, corrupted, or the storage device may be damaged.
Teacher tip
You have may have backup systems in place in school that pupils are familiar with. Perhaps discuss these as part of learning cycle one.

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom. Plus, you can set it as homework or revision for pupils and keep their learning on track by sharing an online pupil version of this lesson.
