Why this why now
This unit builds on pupils' knowledge of capital letters, numerals and the four joins as they now apply their learning to more advanced, cursive tasks. Writing different word types helps pupils reinforce both their spelling and grammar knowledge, practising letter formation in a meaningful context. They integrate previous learning of capital letters and lower case letters in this unit, mastering when to lift the pencil for proper nouns and sentences. Consistent spacing and smooth transitions prepare pupils for forming letter strings in future units, where fluent, cursive writing is required.
Prior knowledge requirements
- The primary grapheme phoneme correspondence (GPC) for all 40+ phonemes.
- The letter names for all 26 letters of the alphabet.
- The difference between capital and lower case letters.
- Knowledge of the formation of all lower-case letters in print form.
- The ability to hold a pencil in a comfortable tripod grip.
- How to sit correctly at a table, holding a pencil comfortably and correctly.
- Recognition of the numerals 0-10.
- How to use the four join and break letters.
