Reviewing more high frequency words, using lead-ins

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can write high frequency words using cursive handwriting.

      Key learning points

      1. High frequency words are words that appear most frequently in written texts.
      2. Letters in the high frequency words will be joined using a range of joins depending on the letters in the word.
      3. The first letter of the word always has a lead in and the last letter has a lead out.
      4. There is appropriate spacing between the letters.
      5. You don’t lift your pencil until the letter string is complete.

      Keywords

      • High frequency word - the words that appear most frequently in written texts

      • Lead in - the stroke or line that guides us into starting a letter

      • Lead out - the stroke or line that guides us to smoothly finish a letter

      • Join - connecting together

      • Letter string - a group of letters that are written together in a word

      Common misconception

Children may tend to forget the lead in for the first letter.

Keep reminding children to say to themselves 'ready, line, go' before starting to ensure they are prompted to start on the baseline with a lead in.

      Teacher tip

Some schools may use slightly different formations for certain letters. For example, the letter t could go up to the ascender line. Adapt based on your setting.
