This unit uses and builds on punctuation rules of three varied speech sentences and how to use apostrophes for contraction, singular and plural possession in the Year 5 grammar unit 'Speech punctuation, parenthesis and apostrophes'. New learning includes how to use the hyphen, using ellipsis for authorial effect, building text cohesion with colons and semi-colons and using bullet points accurately. This unit prepares pupils for further English learning at KS3 level by developing their punctuation agility to directly apply to all pieces of writing, including creative and analytical pieces.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • We use punctuation to control and organise our sentences.
  • Punctuation helps us to express meaning.
  • Punctuation helps us to modify or emphasise the meaning in our sentences.
  • Full stops, commas, apostrophes and exclamation marks are examples of punctuation.
