Spelling words with the suffix "-ing", using alternative rules
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can learn new rules to spell words when adding the suffix -ing.
Key learning points
- When -ing is added to the end of a word, it can show the past tense or the present tense.
- If the root word has a short vowel and a single consonant, the consonant letter is doubled when the suffix is added.
- If the verb ends in a "y", just add "-ing".
- How to spell the curriculum word: answer.
Keywords
Suffix - a letter or group of letters at the end of a word which creates another word
Present tense - tells the reader the action is happening now
Root word - the base word from which other words are formed often by adding prefixes or suffixes
Verb - a doing or being word
Past tense - tells the reader the action happened before now
Common misconception
Pupils may think 'y' is removed and replaced with an 'i', like with the suffix -ed.
Show that we end up with two 'i's in a row if this happens: fly becoming fliing, so we keep the 'y'.
Teacher tip
If pupils need to secure the basic three rules first, you could leave out the rule related to two syllable words with stressed and unstressed syllables to introduce in Year 4. 'Answer' may de decodable depending on accent, so focus less on looking at the exception when practising.
