Why this why now
This is the final writing unit pupils complete in the Oak National Academy English curriculum, and it uses and builds on all of the knowledge and expertise they have developed in the previous 11 years. Now that pupils have developed their proficiency as writers across a range of forms, they focus solely on developing the flair and confidence required to make their writing compelling to all readers.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils understand the difference between narrative and descriptive writing
- Pupils understand that tone and register change, depending on purpose or audience
- Pupils have read a variety of texts for different purposes
- Pupils can use simple, compound and complex sentences
- Pupils can use a range of figurative language devices for effect, in their own writing
- Pupils can use a range of rhetorical language devices for effect, in their own writing
- Pupils can use single paragraph outlines, to plan their writing
- Pupils can mirror opening and closing paragraphs, for effect
- Pupils have been introduced to a range of ambitious vocabulary
- Pupils can use motifs in their own writing

Writing masters
In this unit, pupils refine proficiency and flair as writers. Across fiction and non-fiction writing forms, they develop techniques that give them greater depth and flair in their writing. At the end of the unit, they write a narrative informed by emotion-led plot and detailed descriptions.
