La diversité culturelle : regular present tense

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use the present tense of -er, -ir and the four groups of -re verbs in the context of cultural events in France.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. The three infinitive endings in French are -er, -ir and -re.
      2. Regular verbs follow a common and consistent pattern when conjugated.
      3. The four groups of -re verbs are: verbs like 'entendre', like 'prendre', like 'traduire' and verbs like 'écrire'.
      4. 'Connaitre' is conjugated in the present tense as: connais, connais, connait, connaissons, connaissez, connaissent.

      Keywords

      • Regular verb - a verb that follows a consistent and predictable pattern when conjugated

      Common misconception

There are two present tenses in French, simple present and present continuous, like English.

There is only one present tense in French, which is used to communicate both English present tenses. For example, 'je joue au foot' can be translated as both I play football and I am playing football.

      Teacher tip

Tasks A2a and C2a each have two options. Option 1 is aimed at the majority of students and contains greater challenge. Option 2 is aimed at students who may require greater support in completing the task.

      Equipment

A mini whiteboard and pen, as well as pen and paper for making notes, would be useful, if available.
