Key learning points

  1. Possessive adjectives agree in number and sometimes gender with the thing that is owned.
  2. Possessive pronouns can replace a possessive adjective + noun. Start with a definite article e.g. le mien, la mienne.
  3. Moi, toi, lui, elle, nous, vous, eux, elles are used to mean me, you, him, her, us, you and them as emphatic pronouns.
  4. An open [o] is pronounced as in 'porte' and a closed [o/ô] is pronounced as in 'photo'.

Keywords

  • Possessive adjective - a word that goes before a noun to show ownership or belonging

  • Possessive pronoun - replaces a possessive adjective and a noun

  • Emphatic pronoun - used to emphasise the subject of a sentence, in comparisons, and after 'c'est'

Common misconception

There is only one word in French to translate 'mine', 'yours', 'his', 'hers'.

In French, possessive pronouns match the gender and number of the noun they replace in a sentence. They are formed of the definite article and the pronoun, for example: 'les chocolats, ce sont les miens,' meaning 'the chocolates, they are mine'.
