Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Closed [eu] sounds like 'deux' or, when open or spelled [œu], sounds like 'coeur'.
      2. An indirect object pronoun replaces the person, people or thing(s) that the verb action is done to.
      3. The plural indirect object pronouns are: nous, vous, and leur.
      4. Unlike direct object pronouns, indirect object pronouns don't change according to the gender of the nouns they replace.

      Keywords

      • Indirect object pronoun - replaces the person, people or thing(s) that the verb action is done to, when the action is to me, for you, to them

      Common misconception

There are separate indirect object pronouns in French to replace masculine and feminine nouns.

French indirect object pronouns make no distinction for gender (unlike direct object pronouns). 'Lui' means both '(to) him' and '(to) her'. 'Leur' means '(to) them' and can refer to both masculine and feminine nouns.

      Teacher tip

Task B3 has two versions. Option 1 is intended for most students. Option 2 gives further support to students who may need it. Option 1 only is included in the video. Teachers might also like to play students a recording of 'la Marseillaise' to pupils and look at the lyrics of the opening verse.

      Equipment

Speaking task A3 uses dice on the presentation. Teachers may wish to use their own sets of dice in the classroom to allow pairs more freedom to create sentences.
