Une famille française : indirect object pronouns 'lui' and 'vous'

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use the indirect object pronouns 'lui' and 'vous' to describe the indirect actions of verbs alongside direct object pronouns in social situations.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. When someone or something receives the action of a verb indirectly, use 'lui' to mean 'to him/her': 'je lui parle'.
      2. When the indirect receiver of the action of the verb is formal 'you', use 'vous' to mean 'to you': 'elle vous parle'.
      3. Indirect object pronouns are also used after verbs followed by 'à', e.g., 'il lui parle, nous vous téléphonons'.

      Keywords

      • Indirect object pronoun - replaces the person, people or thing(s) that the verb action is done to, when the action is done to me, for you, to them

      • Lui - to him, to her

      • Vous - to you (plural, singular formal)

      Common misconception

When using the verb 'rappeler', you need to have a suitable word for 'about', e.g., 'I am reminding you about the party'.

When using the verb 'rappeler', there is no need to include a word for 'about'. 'Rappeler' contains this idea within the verb.

      Teacher tip

When introducing the family tree, describe this in full sentences in the target language to model good practice to students.
