      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can describe a cultural or religious festival in a French-speaking country using topic-specific vocabulary, and direct and indirect object pronouns.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. An indirect object pronoun replaces the person, people or thing(s) that the verb action is done to.
      2. Direct and indirect object pronouns avoid repetition of nouns and add sophistication.
      3. Object pronouns can be used in your speaking, e.g. when describing a photo, or in your writing.
      4. It is interesting and useful to know about some popular customs and celebrations in different Francophone countries.

      Keywords

      • Indirect object pronoun - replaces the person, people or thing(s) that the verb action is done to, when the action is to me, for you, to them

      Common misconception

I want to avoid using object pronouns because my writing will be longer and therefore better if I just repeat all the nouns.

Although object pronouns use fewer words, it is much better style to use them to avoid repeating nouns. Appropriate use of object pronouns is also positively rewarded in exams as an example of complexity.

      Teacher tip

There are references made to the Quebec carnaval in this lesson. Teachers might find it useful to show images of 'tire d'érable' and the magnificent ice sculptures created at this event.

      Equipment

Mini whiteboards and pens are useful, if available.
