Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. The conditional is a verb form that expresses the idea 'would'; it is often followed by a 2nd verb in the infinitive.
      2. The conditional of -er verbs is formed by adding the imperfect tense endings to the infinitive stem, e.g. j'aimerais.
      3. The infinitive stem in the conditional and 1-verb future means that the sound [r], as in 'rue', is in all their forms.
      4. [a] as in ‘animal’ and [ai] as in 'vrai' are in the endings; 'je' future ending 'ai' is exceptionally pronounced [é].
      5. Use the conditional of 'vouloir' or 'aimer' + infinitive to say what you would 'like' to do.

      Keywords

      • Conditional - a form of verb used to express what would happen

      Common misconception

In French, there is a separate word for 'would'.

The conditional verb form expresses the idea of 'would + verb' in its spelling. Students should be encouraged to used the conditional form of verbs instead of being over reliant on 'vouloir' in the conditional.

      Teacher tip

For the dictogloss activity in LC2, it is suggested that students might need to listen to the audio file twice during the note-taking stage. A third listen might be useful for students requiring more support.

      Equipment

Mini whiteboards and pens are useful, if available.
