Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Use word order one with the conjunctions 'und', 'oder', 'aber', 'denn'.
      2. Use word order three with the conjunctions 'weil', 'obwohl', 'dass', 'wenn', 'ob', 'da'.
      3. Use word order two if starting a sentence with something other than the subject, e.g., an adverb.
      4. Possessive adjectives are used before a noun to show ownership or belonging. They agree with the noun they describe.
      5. The genitive case form of possessive adjectives means 'of...', e.g., 'meines Vaters' means 'of my father'.

      Keywords

      • Word order one (WO1) - subject - verb - object; the standard word order in a German sentence, e.g., ‘ich lerne Deutsch’

      • Word order two (WO2) - inverts the subject and verb in a sentence, e.g., 'montags spiele ich Tennis'

      • Word order three (WO3) - the verb is sent to the end of the clause or sentence, e.g., '.... , weil es Spaß macht'

      • Genitive case - case used to indicate possession and also used after certain prepositions

      Common misconception

      'Denn' triggers word order 3.

Not all conjunctions trigger word order 3. 'Denn' means 'because' and is followed by word order 1. 'Weil' also means 'because', but triggers word order 3.
