Gruppenzwang: word order with separable verbs in single and 2-verb clauses

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use separable verbs in present and perfect tenses, in 2-verb structures, and with the correct word order to talk about school experiences.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. The stress falls on the separable prefix of separable verbs.
      2. Separable verbs are made up of two parts: a prefix and the main verb.
      3. In the present tense, the prefix moves to the end of the clause.
      4. In the perfect tense, the past participle is made up of the prefix and the base past participle.
      5. In word order three clauses, the prefix and verb join up in separable verbs.

      Keywords

      • Separable verbs - a two-part verb, with a prefix and a main verb, e.g., 'einladen'

      Common misconception

All verbs with prefixes are separable.

Some prefixes are separable in some verbs but inseparable in others. For example, 'wieder' in 'wiedersehen' is separable, but not in 'wiederholen'. The stress always falls on the separable prefix.
