Post war migration to Britain: Migration from East Africa

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can recall that the end of the British Empire and independence movements led many people to move to Britain from East Africa.

      Key learning points

      1. Following the independence of many countries in Asia and Africa, there was a wave of migration to Britain.
      2. Commonwealth citizens felt connected to tolerant Britain, and were encouraged to move there by the British government.
      3. Following independence in Kenya and Uganda, people of Asian descent experienced discrimination.
      4. In 1972, Ugandan President Idi Amin expelled Asian people from the country, many of whom moved to Britain.
      5. The immigration of this group influenced British immigration policies amid racial disparities and societal divisions.

      Keywords

      • Commonwealth - an international organisation consisting of states which once belonged to the British Empire

      • Expulsion - to drive out or force away

      Common misconception

All migrants from Kenya and Uganda during the mid-20th century were of Asian descent.

Not all migrants from Kenya and Uganda during the mid-20th century were of Asian descent; however, large numbers of them were due to the discrimination they faced in newly-independent Kenya and Uganda.

      Teacher tip

Use a timeline to clearly outline the sequence of events related to migration, immigration policies and socio-political contexts to help students better understand the chronological order and causal relationships between key events.
