Post war migration to Britain: The Falklands

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can recall that Britain went to war with Argentina in 1982 over the Falkland Islands, which was home to many settlers of British descent.

      Key learning points

      1. Post-decolonisation, some small countries remained in the British Empire as British Overseas Territories.
      2. The Falkland Islands, near Argentina, had been claimed by Britain in 1833 and British people had settled there.
      3. In 1982, Britain sent troops to defend the Falklands from Argentine invasion, which they defeated.
      4. The Falklands War created tension between Britain and Argentina which still exists today.

      Keywords

      • British Overseas Territories - any of the territories that are governed by the United Kingdom but lie outside the British Isles; many were formerly British crown colonies

      Common misconception

The Falkland Islands have always been uncontested British territory.

There is a complex and prolonged sovereignty dispute with Argentina over the Falkland Islands and there were once historical claims by Spain.

      Teacher tip

Encourage students to critically analyse and compare different perspectives on the Falkland Islands' sovereignty.
