Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. If you know the properties of a shape you can use a ruler and a grid to create it.
  2. Lines are perpendicular when they are at right angles to each other.
  3. Lines are parallel because they are always the same distance apart.

Keywords

  • Quadrilateral - A quadrilateral is a polygon with four straight sides and four vertices.

  • Vertex / vertices - A vertex is the point where two lines meet. The plural is vertices.

Common misconception

Children overgeneralise about the appearance of polygons such as rectangles and pentagons and do not recognise them when they are less typical.

Ensure modelling and examples show a range of shapes. For example, show a range of rectangles and focus on the key properties of parallel and perpendicular sides to identify that they are all rectangles.

Ensure adequate time is given in this lesson for pupils to draw their own examples. Sharing and comparing gives additional opportunities to classify and rehearse properties of polygons.
