      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can echo a rhythm in time and know that rhythm is the pattern of sounds that we play and sing.

      Key learning points

      1. We warm up before singing so that our bodies, minds and voices are ready to sing.
      2. We can sing and move in time to a steady pulse and find the rhythm in our songs and chants.
      3. We can control changes on our percussion instruments, starting, playing and stopping together.
      4. We can echo rhythmic phrases when playing our percussion instruments.

      Keywords

      • Pulse - the regular, steady heartbeat of the music

      • Syllable - a part of a word

      • Rhythm - the pattern of sounds that we play and sing

      • Percussion instrument - a device used to make a musical sound which is played by striking, scraping or shaking

      • Echo - an exact copy of a musical phrase

      Common misconception

Pulse, beat and rhythm are the same thing.

Pulse is the regular heartbeat of the music. Rhythm is the pattern of sounds and silences of differing durations.

      Teacher tip

If pupils are struggling to count syllables and connect syllables to rhythm, have them place their hand under their chin and feel their chin touching their hand as they say the words. This can help them count the syllables.
