Why this why now

Pupils will continue to develop their understanding of how to train for improved everyday health and/ or sporting performance. From the applied anatomy and physiology units they will have an in-depth understanding of how our bodies respond to exercise and adapt to cope better after a period of training and this knowledge lays the foundations for understanding these training principles. Later in physical training they will discover different methods of training that are of benefit to different individuals at different times in their training programmes.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know that it is important to train regularly but also to have rest days for recovery
  • Pupils know what a typical resting heart rate is and how to calculate your maximum heart rate (220 minus your age)
  • Pupils understand the heart rate response to exercise
