Revelation and authority of the Qur'an

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explain the importance of the Qur'an as a source of authority for Muslims.

      Key learning points

      1. The first revelations of the Qur'an came on the Night of Power.
      2. The Qur'an is the complete revelations for all of humanity.
      3. The Qur'an contains the direct words of Allah without error.
      4. The Qur'an is the ulitmate authority for Muslim teachings.

      Keywords

      • Corrupted - altered from its original divine form

      • Jibril - angel who delivered revelations to the Prophet Muhammad

      • Muhammad - final prophet of Islam

      • Night of Power - the night the Qur'an was first revealed

      • Surah - a chapter of the Qur'an

      Common misconception

That the Qur'an was revealed entirely on the Night of Power.

The Qur'an was revealed in sections over a period of around 23 years, always to the Prophet Muhammad. Some sections were revealed whilst Muhammad was living in Makkah, others in Madinah.

      Teacher tip

To understand the impact that translations can have on the interpretation of the Qur'an students can look online at sites which show how the same Arabic Surah and Ayah are translated differently by different translators.
