      Why this why now

This unit builds on the emotions unit in Year 1. Pupils continue to develop their understanding of different emotions, learning how to name, scale and manage feelings such as excitement, frustration and sadness. Pupils add more strategies to their managing emotions toolkit, an idea developed throughout the primary curriculum. In Year 2, pupils experience greater social complexity and independence, making it timely to expand their emotional vocabulary and coping strategies, including understanding change.

      Prior knowledge requirements

      • Pupils can recognise and name common emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger, and worry in themselves and others.
      • Pupils should understand from earlier learning that talking about how they feel with trusted adults helps them to manage emotions and feel better.
      • Pupils have begun to develop simple strategies for managing their emotions, such as taking deep breaths or asking for help.
