Key learning points

  1. Gaming can be fun but also has risks and negative aspects.
  2. Streaming videos online can be interesting, amusing and useful, but can also be upsetting or annoying.
  3. Not all games and videos are suitable for our age.
  4. Some online content is offensive and / or illegal.

Keywords

  • Positive - when something is good, wanted or pleasant

  • Negative - when something is bad, unwanted or unpleasant

  • Streaming - playing a video using the internet

Common misconception

It is easy to avoid harmful content online.

It takes knowledge and practice to avoid inappropriate or offensive content online. Young people often lack the skills to make those choices independently. Children need to be guided by positive role models to make healthy choices.

Teacher tip

Create space for young people to share their excitement and fascination with the online space to ensure that you open up conversations. Include the positive sides of the online world as well as the negative.
