Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Scientists who study food and how it works in your body are called nutritionists.
  2. Nutritionists carry out tests and make observations of the food we eat.
  3. Nutritionists share their results with food companies and schools to encourage healthy choices.

Keywords

  • Healthy - The health of a living thing is how well or ill it is. A healthy diet keeps a person or animal well.

  • Nutritionist - A nutritionist is a scientist who studies food and how it works in your body.

  • Observe - To observe is to look very closely and use other senses too.

  • Choice - A choice is the act of picking or choosing something.

  • Result - The result of a test is what happened or what was found out.

Common misconception

All fat in the diet can cause ill health.

Explanation that humans need some fat in their diet but that they should not eat large amounts of fat regularly if they want to have a healthy diet.

Give pupils ownership of this lesson by getting them to choose which foods to test. Pupils can discuss which foods they think contain a lot, a little, or no fat. They can then check whether their knowledge is correct by testing these foods.
Teacher tip

Equipment

Paper, foods containing different amounts of fat such as a tomato, cheese, chocolate spread, crisps, bread and a sausage. Check for any allergies and adjust foods to be used accordingly.
