      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explain why different plants live in different habitats.

      Key learning points

      1. A habitat is where a group of plants and animals live.
      2. A habitat provides the things an animal or plant needs to survive.
      3. Most living things live in habitats to which they are suited.
      4. Different plants live in different habitats, depending on their basic needs.

      Keywords

      • Plant - A plant is a living thing that often has roots, stem and leaves.

      • Living thing - Something that is living is alive. It can grow, reproduce, move, feed and get rid of waste material.

      • Habitat - The place where a plant or animal lives is called its habitat.

      • Suitable - Someone or something that is suitable for a particular purpose or occasion is right or acceptable for it.

      • Basic needs - A living thing's basic needs must be met for them to stay alive.

      Common misconception

Habitats can only be divided into 'hot' and 'cold' habitats. Plants are not living things.

Examples of different habitats where plants live and how these meet their needs, including different conditions such as underwater, desert, grasslands and savannah.

      Teacher tip

There are many online live streams and videos of different plant habitats, e.g. woodland, desert and the Arctic, that the children can watch that will really bring this lesson to life.

      Equipment

Plant habitat non-fiction books, access to plant websites, fact files, plant sorting cards, habitat photographs, scissors, paper, pencils.
