Key learning points

  1. Sound-symbol correspondence [ci] sounds different in Spanish and English and benefits from frequent practice.
  2. 'tiene' is part of the verb 'tener' and means 'she, he, or it has'.
  3. 'tiene' is useful for communicating about the belongings someone else has. For example, 'tiene una bicicleta'.

Keywords

  • [ci] - sound-symbol correspondence

  • Tiene - Spanish verb meaning ‘she, he, it has’ and just 'has'

Common misconception

Spanish verbs always need pronouns, like in English ,to convey the person doing the action.

Spanish verbs don't always need pronouns. When 'tiene' follows a name or noun it just means 'has'. Otherwise 'tiene' refers to the 'she', 'he' or 'it' that is the subject of the sentence and means 'she, he, it has'.
