      Key learning points

      1. In most of mainland Spain the 'c' in 'ce' and 'ci' is pronounced as in the 'th' of the English 'throw'.
      2. 'Cuánto' agrees with the noun in gender and number when it is used as an adjective: cuánto, cuánta, cuántos, cuántas.
      3. 'Cuál' and 'quién' are pronouns. They stand alone or appear before a verb.
      4. 'Cuál' refers to a singular noun and 'cuáles' refers to a plural noun.
      5. 'Quién' refers to one person and 'quiénes' refers to more than one person.

      Keywords

      • Interrogative adjective - a question word that appears before a noun; in Spanish this includes 'cuánto' (how much)

      • Interrogative pronoun - a question word that replaces a noun; in Spanish this includes 'cuál' (which) and 'quién' (who)

      Common misconception

'Cuál' and 'cuáles' may appear directly before a noun.

'Cuál' and 'cuáles' may not appear directly before a noun. As they are pronouns, they either stand alone or appear before a verb.
