Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Andalusia (Andalucía in Spanish) is a region in southern Spain known for its rich history and culture.
      2. To express opinions and make suggestions, we can use some impersonal verbs in the 3rd person singular.
      3. Examples of impersonal uses of verbs are ‘basta (con)’, ‘falta’, ‘hace falta’, ‘parece’ and ‘vale la pena’ .
      4. These impersonal verbs are used without a subject and followed by an infinitive.

      Keywords

      • Impersonal verb - 3rd person form of a verb that doesn’t refer to a specific person and is used without a subject

      • Infinitive - form of the verb giving its general meaning, with no subject or tense

      Common misconception

I can translate verbs like 'basta' and 'hace falta' word-for-word.

Verbs like 'basta' and 'hace falta' can’t always be translated word-for-word - they don’t work the same way as English verbs. You need to choose the most idiomatic or natural-sounding translation based on the context.
