Description

This unit explores the characteristics of healthy friendships and strategies for making new friends. Pupils understand why friendships are important for wellbeing, learn how friendships change over time, and develop practical skills for managing friendship transitions respectfully.

This unit supports pupils during their transition to secondary school by equipping them with essential friendship-building skills for new social environments. Positioned at the start of Year 7, it provides a foundation for understanding healthy relationships that will be built upon throughout their RSHE curriculum. At this developmental stage, pupils are forming new peer groups and often require practical strategies for communication, conflict resolution and maintaining positive relationships.

  1. A healthy friendship
  2. Making new friends
  3. The importance of friendships
  4. Changing friendships

  • Pupils should understand basic concepts of kindness and fairness in relationships from Key Stage 2, recognising that treating others well is important for maintaining friendships.
  • Pupils should be familiar with identifying their own feelings and understanding that disagreements with friends are normal and can be resolved through communication.
  • Pupils should have experience of working cooperatively with others in primary school and understand that different people have different interests, personalities and communication styles.
