  • Online safety

Description

This unit helps pupils navigate online safety by recognising harmful content, understanding when and how to report concerns, and accessing appropriate support. Pupils explore both the benefits and risks of online activity whilst learning their role in creating safer digital communities.

As Year 7 pupils become increasingly independent online, they need practical skills to identify and respond to harmful content appropriately. This unit provides essential safeguarding knowledge, teaching pupils when and how to report concerns and access support. Positioned early in secondary school, it establishes clear reporting procedures and reinforces that seeking help is responsible, not troublesome, creating a foundation for safe digital citizenship throughout their teenage years.

  1. The joys of the online world
  2. Harmful content online
  3. Recognising when to report harmful online content
  4. How to report concerns
  5. What happens after reporting a concern
  6. Being responsible for a safer online community

  • Pupils should understand basic online safety rules, including not sharing personal information with strangers and telling a trusted adult if something makes them uncomfortable.
  • Pupils should be familiar with common online platforms and activities such as social media, gaming and messaging, and understand that online actions have real-world consequences.
  • Pupils should recognise from previous units that not all online content is true or safe, and that people can behave differently online than they would face-to-face.
