Il faut éviter : indefinite, demonstrative and interrogative adjectives

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can understand texts using a range of indefinite, demonstrative and interrogative adjectives describing how to stay healthy.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. 'Même(s)', 'autre(s)', and 'quelque(s)', meaning 'same', 'other' and 'some', agree in number with the noun.
      2. 'Tout le' meaning 'whole' or 'all' agrees in number and gender. 'Chaque' (each) and 'plusieurs' (several) do not change.
      3. [c] is soft before e, i and y or if it has a cedilla [ç]: merci, ça va. Before all other letters, [c] is a hard sound.
      4. Use demonstrative adjectives 'ce, cet, cette, ces' to mean 'this/that/those'; they often answer the question 'which?'
      5. Use interrogative adjectives 'quel, quelle, quels, quelles' to ask 'which?'

      Keywords

      • Indefinite adjective - describes a noun in a non-specific sense e.g. some, every, each

      • Interrogative adjective - asks a question about a noun, translated as 'what' or 'which'

      • Demonstrative adjective - specifies a particular noun, indicating 'this', 'that', 'these' or 'those'

      Common misconception

'Plusieurs' and 'chaque' have singular and plural forms.

'Plusieurs' is always written with an 's' and introduces a plural noun e.g. plusieurs problèmes. 'Chaque' is always written in the singular and introduces a singular noun e.g. chaque problème.

      Teacher tip

For Task B2, teachers may consider a solo-duo-ensemble cycle whereby pupils say the text three times: once to themselves, once to a partner and once all together.

      Equipment

Mini whiteboards and pens are useful if available.
