Key learning points

  1. Use 'jouer à' to talk about playing sports and 'jouer de' to talk about playing instruments.
  2. 'À' combines with 'le'/'les' to form 'au'/'aux' and 'de' combines with 'le'/'les' to form 'du'/'des.'
  3. The 'x' at the end of 'aux' creates liaison before a vowel.
  4. Some verbs require 'à' or 'de' before an infinitive e.g. 'aider à', 'arrêter de'.

Keywords

  • Preposition - a word that is used before a noun, a noun phrase, or a pronoun, connecting it to another word

Common misconception

All verbs in French can be used before an infinitive without a preposition.

Certain verbs require 'à' or 'de' before a an infinitive. Learning which verbs this applies to is helpful. Teachers might like to point out the more frequently occurring verbs of this type to help students develop their confidence in using them.
