Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Extended reading texts can be exploited to enrich our vocabulary and use of complex structures in familiar topics.
      2. It is important to plan the use of tenses and the inclusion of regular and irregular verbs when creating a longer text.
      3. Use of reference sources can help to create a personal response.
      4. One present tense in French translates the simple present and the present continuous; important when describing a photo.
      5. Careful planning, pre-rehearsal and immediate repetition help to improve performance in speaking tasks.

      Keywords

      • Simple present - describes habitual events in the present: 'I do'

      • Present continuous - describes events happening right now: 'I am doing'

      Common misconception

There are two present tenses in French.

There is only one present tense in French which translates both the simple present (I do) and the present continous (I am doing).

      Teacher tip

Students may need reminding of the difference in present tenses when preparing the photo task as students will more naturally describe a photo in English using the present continuous.

      Equipment

Teachers may wish to encourage students to use class dictionaries in this lesson if available.
