Why this why now

In this unit pupils will return to a familiar context, focusing on friendships and making free time plans, whilst deepening their grasp of higher level structures such as impersonal verbs, learning a new verb pattern in the present tense, and expanding their knowledge of the imperfect tense. This will enable them to make contrasts between their lives when they were younger and today, and to talk about what they were doing when something happened. Being able to confidently switch between tenses is a key skill to be developed further at KS4 and beyond.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils can recognise verbs like connaître in the present tense singular forms.
  • Pupils can form the perfect tense by using an auxiliary verb and a past participle.
  • Pupils know how to form regular past participles and are familiar with some irregular past participles.
  • Pupils know that impersonal verbs il y a and il fait can be used to describe the weather.
  • Pupils know that the impersonal verb il est is used to tell the time.
  • Pupils can form the imperfect tense of regular verbs in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd person singular.
  • Pupils know that the imperfect tense can be used to translate what we 'used to' do.
  • Pupils know that the imperfect can be used to describe what we 'were doing' when something else happened.

My personal world: Mes amis

This unit introduces verbs that follow the pattern of connaître in the present and perfect tense and extends pupils' use of impersonal verbs. It also develops mastery of the imperfect tense of regular verbs, set in the context of past and present friendships and activities.
