      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can describe how to search the internet safely and effectively.

      Key learning points

      1. We can type things into search bars to find information online.
      2. What we type is very important.
      3. We need to spell words correctly to find the things we want.
      4. If we see something that makes us upset, unsure or worried, we should ask a trusted adult for help.

      Keywords

      • Internet - a network connecting digital devices across the world

      • Online - using the internet

      • World Wide Web - the websites on the internet

      • Information - facts about something or someone

      • Search bar - the box where you type in something you want to find online

      Common misconception

The tnternet understands what we are thinking.

Because the tnternet is increasingly intuitive and often autocompletes and autocorrects our searches, it can be easy to assume that it understands us as people. However, we must be specific when typing search queries.

      Teacher tip

Demonstrate both effective and ineffective web searching throughout the lesson to help pupils understand how to do it. Perform a test run before the lesson to ensure search results are age appropriate.
