Why this why now
In Year 5, pupils are making more independent choices. Building on previous knowledge of nutrition and physical activity, this unit addresses realistic challenges of maintaining a healthy lifestyle while developing a positive body image. This is timely as pupils navigate physical changes and social pressures. By learning these concepts now, pupils develop strategies to make balanced health choices, resist unhealthy pressures and foster self-respect.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils should know from Key Stage 1 that eating a variety of foods from different food groups, staying physically active and getting enough sleep contribute to good health.
- Pupils should understand from earlier learning the principles of a balanced diet including appropriate portions, limiting sugary and processed foods and drinking plenty of water.
- Pupils should be familiar with the idea that everyone's body is different and develops at different rates and that comparing bodies is unhelpful.
- Pupils should know from earlier learning about trusted adults at school and home who can help them if they are worried about their physical or mental health.
