Why this why now

This unit uses and builds on learning around word class, particularly verbs, from the Year 1 grammar unit 'Word class'. Pupils learn to determine whether a verb in a sentence is in the simple present or past tense. In this unit, pupils are introduced to writing accurate simple sentences that express a single idea and include a verb. They learn that a simple sentence can take the form of a statement, question or command and they begin to join two related ideas with 'and'. This unit prepares pupils for compound sentence structure work in the Year 2 grammar unit 'Compound sentences'.
