      Why this why now

This unit uses and builds on pupils' speaking and listening skills developed through the EYFS to speak in full sentences. Pupils use the knowledge they are building around word class to gap fill single words in sentence scaffolds and to speak in full sentences. The critical learning in this unit is around being verbs - those that are formed from the imperative 'to be'. Pupils learn that being verbs can, and often do, act as the main verb in a sentence. This unit prepares pupils for further tense and sentence structure work in the Year 1 grammar unit 'Simple sentences'.

      Prior knowledge requirements

      • We use sentences to organise our talking and writing.
      • We use words to communicate meaning.
      • We use words when talking and writing.
      • Grammar is an important area of English.
      • Grammar rules help us use the language correctly.
      • Word class, tense, sentence structure and punctuation form grammar rules.
      • Understanding word class helps us when we are writing.
      • Sentences have rules to help us use them.
      • Every sentence has certain types of words.
