      Why this why now

This unit uses and builds on pupils' understanding of narrative and descriptive writing from 'Myths, legends and stories that inspire'. Pupils now start to look beyond just narrative and description, and learn the importance of creating characters with distinct identities. In the process, they further develop their skills as a writer by utilising the power of dialogue and juxtaposition. This unit prepares pupils for the unit 'Fiction: read around the world' where they start emulating classic texts by practising how to write key specific parts of a narrative or description.

      Prior knowledge requirements

      • Pupils understand the key features of narrative and can define the key words, plot, character and setting
      • Pupils can identify a range of linguistic devices, such as metaphor and simile
      • Pupils can identify and correct basic literacy errors in writing, such as missing capital letters and apostrophes
      • Pupils can expand noun phrases using adjectives and descriptive detail
      • Pupils can distinguish between adjectives and adverbs and use both appropriately

      Malevolent characters: fiction writing

In this unit, pupils create and write malevolent characters. They first look at the conventions of malevolent characters, before learning about the techniques they can use to present their malevolent characters. They finally plan and write their fiction with a malevolent character in it.
