Why this why now

This unit is situated in Year 11 when pupils have had the opportunity to study two religions in depth. They could build on their learning about relationships and family to consider the wider question of sanctity of life, applying this to arguments around abortion and euthanasia.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Religious believers think God is the cause of the universe
  • Atheists do not accept that God caused the universe and look for scientific explanations
  • Religious and non-religious believers have to make ethical decisions that impact life and death situations
  • Everybody has to obey the law in their country, but religious people may also use religious teachings to help them decide what is right
